After having a tug of war with Indian authorities, PayPal has finally ended the electronic withdrawal of funds directly to bank accounts in India. Now users of PayPal can only request for a cheque withdrawal of funds from their PayPal account starting 1st August 2010.

But the good part is that PayPal will not levy any charges for cheque withdrawal. It normally charges $5 as cheque withdrawal fee.

In their recent release PayPal said:

In accordance with regulatory instructions, we would like to notify you about a change in our withdrawal functionality in India starting on August 1, 2010. At present you can request for either an electronic or cheque withdrawal of funds from your PayPal account if you are an India user.

From July 29, 2010 onwards, you will only be able to request for a cheque withdrawal of funds from your PayPal account.

While we are working hard to restore the electronic withdrawal service, in the meantime, we are bringing this matter to your attention so that you can plan your future withdrawal activities accordingly.

To request for a cheque withdrawal:

1. Log into your PayPal account, click on ‘Withdraw’.
2. Click on the ‘Request a cheque from PayPal’ link.
3. Enter the withdrawal amount and select your mailing address, then click ‘Continue’.
4. Click ‘Submit’ to confirm your request.

In order to help you with this change and until further notice, we will refund the $5 USD cheque withdrawal fee to you for cheque withdrawals made on July 29, 2010 onwards.

For any questions, please log into your PayPal account and click ‘Contact Us’ at the bottom of the page.

We apologise for any inconvenience caused from this change in our withdrawal functionality. We will provide ongoing updates to you here. We thank you for your attention and patience as we work tirelessly to resolve this situation as quickly as possible.

I faced an unusual battery issue with my iPhone 3G yesterday. I recently installed iPhone 4.0 on it, unlocked and jailbroke it too.

iOS4.0 has a feature (iOS3.0 also had it) wherein we can see the % battery remaining.

Yesterday, when my iPhone started showing me 8% battery remaining, I plugged it to power to recharge it and as soon as I did that, this device started showing me 72%. I was surprised to see that. Just to check, I removed the recharger and now the battery % settled for 63.

I don’t know why it happened and if it is some bug with the OS.

I don’t find it a reliable way to know the % battery remaining.

Any other way to keep eye on it??

I raised similar issue with my Airtel broadband months ago when Delhi’s IP was identified as Calcutta now I am facing the same issue on Airtel GPRS.

Yesterday, I opened one of my site where I am using Feedjit and was astonished to see that my IP was logged as Oslo, the capital of Norway.

Although I was in Pune, a city in India, I was identified as if I was in Oslo.

It is definitely something related to dynamic IPs that Airtel use in its service both in broadband and gprs.

Rupee has got its symbol finally after Government of India started planning to take Rupee to global market.

It is really a proud feeling to just think that we are going to have a symbol of our own currency rupee.

In a recent development, Government of  India approves a symbol designed by an ex-IITian D Udaya Kumar for Indian Rupee.

Now what’s next?

Next in everyone’s mind is how and when do we get to type the new symbol?

This isn’t going to happen overnight. Ambika Soni, in the press conference held to announce the new symbol, said it might take up to a year for the new Rupee symbol to be used throughout India and about two years for international acceptance.

For widespread usage, the new symbol has to be accepted by the Unicode Consortium’s Unicode Technical Committee that is responsible for the development and maintenance of the Unicode Standard, including the Unicode Character Database.

India is a member of the Unicode Consortium and getting an approval for the new symbol shouldn’t be too difficult. In fact the new symbol had been designed keeping in mind the ease with which it can be incorporated into the existing software systems.

The Unicode Technical Committee meets on a quarterly basis and the next meeting is scheduled for October.

Encoding in the Unicode Standard will also ensure encoding in the International standard ISO/IEC 10646 as both the organizations work closely with each other.

The symbol will also be included in the Indian Standards, viz. 13194:1991 – Indian Script Code for Information Interchange (ISCII), through an amendment to the existing list by the Bureau of Indian Standards. The ISCII specifies various codes for Indian languages for processing on computers along with the key-board lay outs.

While the Government of India can mandate hardware manufacturers to include the symbol in keyboards, it can also be accessed through assigned keyboard combination or via the operating system’s Character Map, post approval from the Unicode Consortium. Software manufacturers can include the symbol in their new updates.

But you don’t necessarily need to wait for the official standards approval to use the new Rupee symbol. Soon typographers will release fonts that include the symbol. But these fonts might not be universally supported.

Moreover, you can build your own font for the new Rupee symbol using free online font-creation tools.

Due to continual dissatisfaction of iPhone 4.0 users about its reception when the phone is held in a particular fashion, Apple has again reiterated the fact that it is not an issue with the phone but they have also extended their support to all its consumers to return the Apple iPhone 4.0 if they still are not satisfied.

Apple in a press release has said that they have tested everything in their labs, and they believe that the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best they have ever shipped.

I can trust them but thousands of users cannot be wrong either. It might be a grapevine but still if I would have owned iPhone 4.0 and experienced the reception issue then I would have returned it straight away. They will definitely come up with the updated version.

Dear iPhone 4 Users,

The iPhone 4 has been the most successful product launch in Apple’s history. It has been judged by reviewers around the world to be the best smartphone ever, and users have told us that they love it. So we were surprised when we read reports of reception problems, and we immediately began investigating them. Here is what we have learned.

To start with, gripping almost any mobile phone in certain ways will reduce its reception by 1 or more bars. This is true of iPhone 4, iPhone 3GS, as well as many Droid, Nokia and RIM phones. But some users have reported that iPhone 4 can drop 4 or 5 bars when tightly held in a way which covers the black strip in the lower left corner of the metal band. This is a far bigger drop than normal, and as a result some have accused the iPhone 4 of having a faulty antenna design.

At the same time, we continue to read articles and receive hundreds of emails from users saying that iPhone 4 reception is better than the iPhone 3GS. They are delighted. This matches our own experience and testing. What can explain all of this?

We have discovered the cause of this dramatic drop in bars, and it is both simple and surprising.

Upon investigation, we were stunned to find that the formula we use to calculate how many bars of signal strength to display is totally wrong. Our formula, in many instances, mistakenly displays 2 more bars than it should for a given signal strength. For example, we sometimes display 4 bars when we should be displaying as few as 2 bars. Users observing a drop of several bars when they grip their iPhone in a certain way are most likely in an area with very weak signal strength, but they don’t know it because we are erroneously displaying 4 or 5 bars. Their big drop in bars is because their high bars were never real in the first place.

To fix this, we are adopting AT&T’s recently recommended formula for calculating how many bars to display for a given signal strength. The real signal strength remains the same, but the iPhone’s bars will report it far more accurately, providing users a much better indication of the reception they will get in a given area. We are also making bars 1, 2 and 3 a bit taller so they will be easier to see.

We will issue a free software update within a few weeks that incorporates the corrected formula. Since this mistake has been present since the original iPhone, this software update will also be available for the iPhone 3GS and iPhone 3G.

We have gone back to our labs and retested everything, and the results are the same— the iPhone 4’s wireless performance is the best we have ever shipped. For the vast majority of users who have not been troubled by this issue, this software update will only make your bars more accurate. For those who have had concerns, we apologize for any anxiety we may have caused.

There seem to be some problem with iOS 4.0, which is restricting service providers to automatically update GPRS settings after the SIM card is inserted. It definitely worked with the previous versions of iPhone operating systems.

After successfully jail breaking and unlocking my iPhone 3G with iOS 4.0 using the direct links to all required applications, I stuck up on having my GPRS not working. I am using Airtel SIM card (India).

The settings were automatically updated when I was on iOS 3.1.2 but with iOS 4.0 there seem to be some problem.

Anyways, I am not here to discuss problems in OS 4.0 rather solutions or temporary work around.

I looked into my iPhone completely but I could not find the “Cellular Data Network” setting under “Settings > General > Network  >” so could not manually update the GPRS or APN settings.

I started Googling and found out a link using which I could make the “Cellular Data Network” visible. But none of them worked for me. I did not have GPRS working so I could not download Cydia application and/or go to the unlockit.co.nz link. I also tried using Cyder 2 to install the APN Editing application but in vain. Nothing seemed to work for me. Modifying the plist file also seemed quite a work. (Reference Link)

Somebody told me to insert Reliance GSM SIM card once and it will make the setting visible (seem to be some flaw in the Reliance GSM card) but I did not have that so another nonviable option for me.

I continued Googling and found out another link using which I could modify the APN settings without having to have it visible. That’s by using iPhone Configuration Utility 2.2 (Reference Link)

I immediately downloaded the utility and installed it on my laptop and modified the APN settings and installed the configuration profile on my iPhone and GPRS started working on my iPhone. (You may need to restart your iPhone)

Happiest man on the earth once again.

Make note of following things:

• Ensure to mention both Name and Identifier under General section as both are mandatory fields.

• For Airtel India only airtelgprs.com is required in the Access Point Name (APN) field.

• For troubleshooting just look into Devices/<phone>/Console for error messages.

No, I am not repeating what others have already flooded the blogging world with i.e. how to jailbreak and unlock OS4.0 on iPhone 3G.

I will only share my story of how I jailbroke and unlocked my iPhone and what all hindrances I faced and how to overcome all those to finally have iOS 4.0 on your iPhone 3G.

It may save you $50+ as professional hackers are charging to do it.

I was happily using iPhone 3.1.2 before I tried upgrading to 3.1.3 and got my phone locked. Later I came to know that the baseband had also been upgraded and it was not possible to downgrade it or jailbreak/ unlock it. I had not option but to wait for iPhone OS 4.0.

The wait was quite long (1.5 months) but fruitful I must say.

Ever since iPhone OS 4.0 released, I was eagerly waiting for the iPhone Dev team to create the jailbreak and unlock tools for iOS 4.0 and as soon as the message came that redsn0w beta and ultrasn0w 0.93 has been released, I picked up my iPhone and started trying it.

(Forgot to mention that I also contacted a professional hacker who was charging 50$ for the unlock but I thought of trying myself at least once. And see I am successful on my first time )

I started Googling, the best thing I do, about iPhone’s unlock and jailbreak. I referred to www.blogsdna.com for majority of things.

I downloaded iOS 4.0 and Redsn0w 0.9.5 Beta 5.

My laptop had iTunes9.0 so I thought of using that one only and tried restoring iOS 4.0 but it failed with an error “iPhone can’t be restored, unkonown error (13)“. I tried it number of times but in vain. Then I downloaded iTuens9.2 and installed it.

I then successfully restored iOS4.0 on my iPhone manually. (Reference article)

After it completed, I got “No SIM card installed. Insert a valid SIM with no PIN lock to activate iPhone” message, that means I was on right track till that moment.

I then ran redsn0w and jailbroke my iPhone 3G. (Reference article)

And the happiest moment came when I could see my iPhone starting up and I could see it working. I was the happiest man on earth at that particular moment.

I immediately inserted my SIM in the phone but it was not detecting the SIM so it had to be unlocked also. (Reference article)

I was only anticipating that it might work

To unlock it, I had to install Ultrasn0w 0.93 from the Cydia but the problem with me was I could not download it from the Cydia on my iPhone as I did not have access to either GPRS (obviously) or WiFi, so I started Googling again and fortunately found an article to do it using my laptop.

I downloaded an application Cyder on my laptop using which I installed Ultrasn0w on my iPhone. (Reference article)

As the article suggested, I had to restart my iPhone twice to make it working and it really worked for me. And I became the proud owner of iOS 4.0 on my iPhone 3G.

This is how I got my phone jailbroke and unlocked. Hope this is useful for everyone who are novice like me and would love to save money too.

FIFA Fever is definitely ON. Everybody is busy in some way or the other with the ongoing FIFA football world cup in South Africa 2010.

Let’s get back to the FIFA world cup history and visually relate to one aspect of FIFA i.e. their Logos which have covered miles in 80 years of FIFA origin.

Yesterday, many tweeps complained about loosing their tweets on twitter after they shockingly found many of their tweets / direct messages missing from their accounts.

There is a new problem with twitter today.

Tweets are automatically getting repeated on twitter not 2 or 3 times but 8 to 9 times and sometimes even more than that.

Many of the users have already raised this issue and we are hoping to see twitter rectify it as early as possible before people start getting irritated and losing interest.

Believe me, this is definitely NOT the end of Twitter Universe.

4 Years of growing excitement but somehow this year’s edition of FIFA World Cup seems to lack in promise as all 32 Nations submit their final lists of 23 players who’d be on the plane to South Africa. Let us take a look at a few of the unfortunate ones to miss out, as the month long “Fiesta Del Fútbol” Kicks off in exactly a week’s time.

There has rarely been a World Cup when managers have not been criticized or scrutinized for Squad Selection by fans and followers alike. This year was no different. In fact, it would not be an exaggeration if one were to say that this edition will have more deserving players missing out than any of the past World Cups. Here are a few major omissions with Argenitna coach Diego Maradona grabbing most of the headlines along with his Italian and French counterparts Marcelo Lippi and Raymond Domenech.

Javier Zanetti:

A mammoth 136 caps for  the Albiceleste, captain of Argentina before ‘El Diego’ took over as  coach, a rock solid season for Inter winning the treble including The Champions League on his record 700th appearance for the club. Not Enough? 
His performances along with fellow compatriots Diego Milito and Esteban Cambiasso were nothing short of extraordinary and he played a pivotal part in Inter’s road to glory this season. “Il Trattore” has enough on his resume to be in any country’s final 23 but somehow Diego Maradona seems to think otherwise.

Esteban Cambiasso:

I long to know what Esteban Cambiasso did to offend Diego Maradona to an extent that he didn’t include him even in his provisional list of 30. Was it the decisive spot kick he missed against Germany  in 2006 Quarter Final which led to Argentina’s defeat? But then he scored arguably one of the most memorable goals in a World Cup capping off a brilliant passing display involving 24 passes. On a more serious note, Cambiasso couldn’t have played any better all season. A wall in Inter’s midfield , he would be any manager’s delight. Pairing up with captain Javier Mascheranho he could very well have formed one of the most formidable Midfield lineups of the tournament. 

Juan Roman Riquelme:

It is sad to imagine a World Cup without the Argentine playmaker who was awarded the title of The Most Artistic player by a popular Spanish newspaper during his playing time at Villarreal. He reportedly made himself unavailable for National Selection after Maradona’s arrival due to ‘El Diego’’s alleged criticism of his game. Riquelme, who is known to be highly sensitive about criticism, had quit for the first time after the 2006 World Cup.

Samir Nasri:

Raymond Domenech has seemed to attract more criticism than applauds for his work with Les Bleus. The Inclusion of the unstable Abou Diaby instead of fellow Arsenal talisman Nasri is a clear example that managers have opted for a more physical approach rather than going for the skills his year. Samir Nasri has scored some magnificent goals for Arsenal this season and helped create even more with some magical display of his abilities. 

Karim Benzema:

If Real Madrid pay 35 Million Euros for a player , he HAS to be special. Making his France debut at the age of just 20, he got his name on the score sheet in his very first game. The only reason for his exclusion can be his not-so-impressive first season with Real Madrid, most of which could be attributed to the fact that he was relegated to the bench for the most part.
Despite all that, Benzema is phenomenally talented and could have proved to be the ingredient  that France need to spice up their attack.

Benni McCarthy:

South Africa’s record goal scorer with more than 30 goals to his name was left out by coach Carlos Alberto Parreira much to the shock of home fans. The reason for his exclusion was  not being in good shape as compared to other players fighting for a spot in the squad. Still, regarded by many as the greatest ever striker to play for the Bafana Bafana, his experience could only have done his country good.

Marcos Senna:

La Furia Roja have the best Midfielders in the world in Xavi, Iniesta, Fabregas and Xabi Alonso. The only reason I did not name Marcos Senna amongst them is because Coach Vicente Del Bosque didn’t think he was good enough to be there. Personally, I reckon him as a solid player who can change the course of a game on his own. His remarkable performances in Spain’s success in Euro 2008 are no secret to anyone. He was even regarded as the player of the tournament by many. At 33, this would have been his last world cup but the likes of Sergio Busquets and Javi Martinez, who recently earned his first cap against South Korea, surely have many more to follow. 

Fabio Grosso:

Marcelo Lippi, Diego Maradona and Raymond Domenech . They all have one thing in common. They have made bold and shocking decisions while making their list of final 23 players inviting criticism from all over the world. Fabio Grosso’s antics in Germany 2006 are still etched in the memory of every Azzuri fan. From winning the decisive penalty against Australia in stoppage time, to scoring the winner against Germany in Extra Time and finally scoring the decisive spot kick in the Penalty Shoot out against France in the final. Grosso had a fairy tail of a World Cup. He was used throughout Italy’s qualifying campaign for South Africa 2010 featuring heavily with some good performances but was controversially left out of the final squad. Using a player throughout qualifying and NOT selecting him for the final showpiece in South Africa is simply beyond my comprehension.

Fabzrizio Miccoli:

What exactly has Fabio Quagliarella done that Fabrizio Miccoli hasn’t? If we are talking about missing clear cut chances, losing footing in goal scoring situations and doing everything else than actually managing to SCORE , then Quagliarella deserves his place. Miccoli,on the other hand, has had a spectacular season with Palermo inspiring them to a 5^th place finish in the Serie A scoring an impressive 19 goals. The same can be said about Palermo’s Antonio Cassano who also had a good season with Sampdoria helping them finish in the top 4. Bases on club performances Miccoli and Cassano deserve to be in the  Azzure Blue of Italy at the tournament much more than Quagliarella who had a lackluster season with Napoli. 

Theo Walcott:

Shockingly included in England’s squad for the last World Cup at just 17 years of age, he is a player with sublime talent. However, he was not to be that lucky this time around as he faced strong competition from Tottenham’s Aaron Lennon who has virtually made the number 7 jersey his own. A worthy successor to Beckham,Lennon probably had one of the best seasons with Spurs this year guiding them to Champion’s League Football. Walcott was overlooked in favour of Manchester City’s Shaun Wright-Phillips in what could have been a 50-50 decision.Fabio Capello chose to go with the much more experienced Wright-Phillips who had quite a satisfying season at the Eastlands.

Ronaldinho:

One of the most gifted footballers on the planet possessing the ability to do with the ball what no one on the entire planet can. It’s a TREAT to watch the Brazilian play at the peak of his game. Many around the world wrote him off when Barcelona sold him to AC Milan for a sum of around £15 million. His performances for Barcelona had dipped drastically causing various pundits to make claims that he was ageing. Proving all his critics wrong, he came back this season, stronger than ever, bringing in various commanding performances for Milan in their midfield. Ronaldinho’s skill and flair will surely be missed in South Africa.

Facebook recently released Like button for websites / blogs and it was working properly since then but since today morning it is continuously giving an error stating that the link cannot be reached and the users are not able to mark any post / page as liked.

Strange but true.

Clicking on the Like button displays literal ‘Error’ and clicking on it opens up a window explaining the message although the page can be reached.

Initially I thought office proxy might be preventing me to like a page but it is giving me same error without proxy at home too. I don’t know what’s happening.

In Central America 115+ people have died after a tropical storm battered Guatemala, Honduras and El Salvador over the weekend. Guatemala was the hardest hit part with at least 92 deaths. Nearly 112,000 people have been evacuated and more than 29,000 are living in temporary shelters.

The storm has not only rendered deaths but has also left behind a giant hole caused by a land slide covering almost space larger than the area of a street intersection.

I have been consistently following the downtime of my websites using various tools so as to give best uptime to my readers. I am using Dreamhost web hosting service for more than a year now and have been consistently getting 98%+ uptime which I never got when I was with Manashosting and Quick2host.

But I was surprised to receive the uptime report of my website NKJLive.com for the month of May 2010.

As per the report, the website downtime in May10 was 0% or in other words there were no outrages at all in the month and the site was active throughout. Though it seems unrealistic but somehow I agree to the report after spending my best 1+ year with web hosting world.

I don’t know how many of you have seen “Diff’rent Strokes” (an American television sitcom) in your childhood but if you have, then you all must be remembering a cute little intelligent black child in the sitcom named Arnold Jackson played by Gary Coleman.

Gary Coleman has died at the age of 42 following a brain hemorrhage on 30th May 2010.

Diff’rent Strokes was aired on the NBC television network from November 3, 1978 to May 4, 1985, and on ABC from September 27, 1985 to March 7, 1986.

I clearly remember him as being the most intelligent and vocal child of my childhood and I never used to miss the show any day.

I know I wasn’t even born when this show was telecasted originally but I have seen the Indian dubbed version of the show on Sony or Doordarshan (correct me if I a wrong on the channel name) in late 90s and I just loved it.

I don’t know who dubbed it in Hindi but even that was perfectly done and suited the mood of the child at that particular moment.

I had completely forgotten about Arlond alias Gary until I saw his dismissal news in the newspaper yesterday with his current photograph and I recognized him within seconds.

Arnold Jackson is one of my childhood’s favorite character and I really felt bad on his dismissal.
